Healthcare professionals in a modern-looking meeting

Healthcare organizations are under intense pressure to move faster with data. Product teams need to understand patient portal engagement. Growth teams want clearer insights into acquisition and adherence. And compliance teams must ensure every new technology meets strict security and privacy standards.

While AI promises to help answer questions faster, in highly regulated environments, enthusiasm often collides with legal review, privacy concerns, and risk management. This means that healthcare teams’ AI initiatives often stall before they ever reach real users.

The good news is that Amplitude’s AI is designed to be adopted safely—not as a replacement for governance, but as an extension of the systems your organization already trusts.

Here’s how leading healthcare teams use Amplitude AI with confidence and safety.

AI analytics’ role in healthcare

Before diving into best practices, it’s important to clarify what AI can actually do inside a healthcare analytics workflow.

For example, Amplitude’s Global Agent:

  • Analyzes the same behavioral data your team already uses (events, funnels, cohorts)
  • Explains trends in natural language
  • Surfaces insights you might otherwise miss
  • Executes multi-step analysis workflows on your behalf

That means:

  • It respects your existing permissions and project boundaries
  • It only operates on data you’ve already instrumented or connected
  • Its outputs are grounded in your data (not generic external sources)

This distinction is what makes AI viable in regulated environments: it doesn’t introduce new risk surfaces—it accelerates how teams interact with data they already trust.

Start with your patients’ outcomes

In healthcare environments, conversations about AI analytics should always begin with outcomes, not models or technical capabilities.

Finding those outcomes starts with questions about your patients and customers:

  • Why do our patients abandon sign-up in the portal?
  • Which channels bring in patients who actually complete care journeys?
  • Where do members drop off during digital onboarding?
  • What behaviors are linked with long-term adherence?

The real value of Amplitude AI is in helping you answer these questions faster—without forcing you to rethink your workflows or introduce unnecessary risk. When applied as a layer on top of your existing (and already governed) processes, AI Agents act as a data-support assistant that helps your teams uncover patterns, move faster, and make more confident decisions without changing how your data is managed.

Treat AI as an assistant on governed data

One of the biggest misconceptions about AI in regulated industries is that it requires a completely different data model or approach to security.

But Amplitude AI operates on the same governed data foundation that organizations already use for dashboards and reporting, meaning:

  • Existing Role-based Access Controls (RBAC) still apply
  • The same project permissions determine data access controls (DAC) for sensitive data and PII
  • The AI operates only on analytics events, charts, and cohorts already available in the platform

In practice, this makes AI feel less like an external tool and more like an assistant that helps users interact with the analytics platform they already rely on. For security teams, that distinction is critical: governance doesn’t disappear when AI is introduced—it carries it forward.

In practice, this also means AI maintains tenant isolation and permission fidelity. For example, if a user can’t access a dataset in a chart, the AI can’t access it in a prompt, either. Even when accessed through integrations like Slack or Microsoft Teams, responses are scoped to the user’s permissions.

Respect PHI through data minimization

Another key principle for healthcare organizations adopting AI analytics is data minimization.

Amplitude AI doesn’t require direct access to protected health information (PHI) to deliver value. Instead, teams typically focus on behavioral events, funnel analysis, cohort comparisons, channel performance, and engagement signals that serve as adherence proxies.

By keeping PHI and personally identifiable information (PII) out of free-text prompts and focusing AI on behavioral analytics, organizations can unlock insight while maintaining strong privacy boundaries. This approach aligns with the broader industry trend toward de-identified analytics environments that separate operational data from exploratory analysis.

Importantly, Amplitude AI only works with data you have already explicitly shared with the platform. It doesn’t access external systems like EHRs, clinical databases, or patient records unless those systems are intentionally integrated—and even then, governance controls still apply.

Make security and privacy a first-class conversation

When you’re evaluating AI tools for healthcare, security and privacy should never appear as an afterthought. In fact, addressing them early often accelerates adoption.

Your review process should include three core resources:

  1. Security and privacy documentation outlining platform certifications, encryption practices, and compliance posture
  2. Product documentation and FAQs explaining how models operate, what data they access, and how logs are handled
  3. Clear explanations of data governance practices, including how access controls, vendor risk management, and secure development practices apply to AI features

Amplitude’s platform is built with privacy-by-design principles, giving customers full control over what data is collected, how it’s used, and how long it’s retained. Capabilities like PII controls, IP anonymization, event retention policies, and self-service deletion ensure organizations can meet evolving regulatory requirements.

Amplitude also uses Zero Data Retention (ZDR) endpoints or equivalent protected endpoints, meaning that your prompts and outputs are not stored or retained by LLM providers to train or improve their models; they are processed only as long as necessary to generate the response and are not retained to improve third-party models.

Under the hood, Amplitude’s protections include:

  • Encryption in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest (AES-256)
  • Audit logs for traceability
  • SSO and MFA for secure access
  • Regional data residency options (US/EU)

For your healthcare organization, this foundation enables AI to move from theoretical risk to practical, governed use.

Address common AI concerns head-on

Healthcare organizations frequently raise the same concerns during AI discussions. Let’s address them directly here.

Is AI safe for organizations that handle PHI?

Yes, when used correctly.

The best practice is to avoid PHI or PII in prompts and instead focus AI on aggregated behavioral analytics. Access to underlying data is still governed by the same permissions used across the analytics platform.

Learn more about Amplitude’s security and privacy safeguards.

Is our data used to train AI models?

With Amplitude, customer data is not used to train underlying models. We implement strict data governance and risk management policies to ensure customer information remains isolated.

More specifically:

  • Your data is never used to train shared or third-party models
  • Prompts and outputs are not retained by model providers
  • Third-party LLMs are contractually prohibited from using your data

Where is AI data stored and who can access it?

AI usage logs (including prompts and responses) are handled under the same encryption, storage, and access policies as the rest of the platform. Security documentation outlines hosting, retention, and data residency practices.

What about AI hallucination?

AI analytics should be positioned as an assistant, not a source of truth.

The best workflows involve verifying insights against existing dashboards or charts. When used this way, AI helps teams navigate data faster rather than replacing analysis.

Our legal team blocks most AI tools

To address legal concerns, Amplitude can assist with the following:

  1. A structured security and legal review process
  2. A non-PHI pilot focused on behavioral analytics use cases

Once legal teams understand the boundaries and controls, they’re often more comfortable enabling limited access.

Trust is what turns AI from experimentation into impact

In healthcare, AI works best when implemented gradually, with safeguards in place at every step.

That’s why adoption should start with a small, low-risk pilot focused on behavioral analytics (not clinical data). Questions like where patients drop off in onboarding or which segments engage with care plans enable your team to explore AI in a controlled, compliant way. From there, you can expand gradually: start with data-savvy users, establish clear usage patterns, and scale access without changing your governance model.

This approach works because healthcare AI must operate within a secure, governed foundation. With Amplitude, you control what data is collected, who can access it, and how long it’s retained. Built-in capabilities such as granular access controls, PII governance, event retention policies, and data deletion help ensure compliance with evolving regulations.

Amplitude AI doesn’t introduce new risks; it works within your existing safeguards. It uses your current data structures, permissions, and workflows to analyze behavior, surface insights, and help teams act faster.

Amplitude AI is built on trust and grounded in transparency, control, and consistent behavior. And for healthcare organizations specifically, it’s designed to support HIPAA-aligned deployments and is covered by your existing Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with Amplitude, allowing organizations to scope usage in line with regulatory requirements.

When those principles are embedded into the platform from the start, AI becomes not just safe to use but essential to how healthcare teams understand, improve, and scale digital experiences.
